If you didn’t know, the minerals in hard water can cause a build-up on the hair, starving it of both moisture and necessary oils. The damage caused by hard water exposure can take a severe toll on both your natural hair and your hair extensions. Be proactive and learn how you can prevent damage to the integrity of your extensions.
WHAT IS HARD WATER?
Hard water is mostly limestone, calcium, magnesium carbonates, bicarbonates, and sulfates.
HOW DOES HARD WATER AFFECT MY HAIR & EXTENSIONS?
Hard water can take a severe toll on both your natural hair and your hair extensions. These minerals cause a build-up on the hair, starving it of moisture and necessary oils. Over time, the build-up of these minerals will not only cause the extensions to become dry, tangled, and lifeless, but they will also start to change their color. The reason for this lies in the fact that the minerals in hard water contain sulfates.
HOW DO I COMBAT HARD WATER TO PRESERVE MY EXTENSIONS?
Because of the extensive amount of sulfates in hard water, stylists will instruct their clients to use Aqua Hair Extensions’ Shampoo, which is a protein, sulfate, gluten, and paraben-free shampoo that gently cleanses hair without stripping away vital nutrients.
IF EXPOSED, WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY EXTENSIONS?
The hard water’s sulfates will break down and fade the color of the extensions. The extensions can turn brassy, orange, or even pink in color. Over time, styling your extensions may also become more difficult when there’s hard water damage, as the integrity of the extensions will begin to degrade. The extensions may not hold a style or may resist styling altogether.
HOW DO I PREVENT OR REVERSE THE EFFECTS OF HARD WATER?
Once extensions show signs of damage, it is typically irreversible. If the damage is minimal and it’s caught early enough, it may be possible to remove some of the build-ups with a clarifying treatment. At your local salon, have your stylist use Aqua Hair Extensions’ Prep Shampoo, followed by an application of our conditioning Hair Mask to rejuvenate, repair, and rebuild elasticity.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT I CAN DO?
The most beneficial treatment plan is to be proactive and prevent damage before it occurs with a hard water softener system or shower head filter.
